The History of Music: Classical Music

Updated: Feb 28, 2023

Music is found in every known culture and religion, past and present, varying widely between times and places. Since all people of the world, including the most isolated tribal groups, have a form of music, it may be concluded that music is likely to have been present in the ancestral population prior to the dispersal of humans around the world.

Classical music refers to the music of Western Europe during the Classical period, roughly from the mid-18th to early 19th century. This period was marked by a move towards simplicity and clarity in musical composition, with a focus on balance, structure, and form. Classical music is characterized by a clear melody, simple harmony, and balanced phrasing. Composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven created works that set the standard for Western classical music, including symphonies, concertos, and chamber music. The period also saw the rise of new genres such as the string quartet and the sonata. The influence of classical music can be seen in later periods, particularly in the development of Romanticism in the 19th century.
