The History of Music: Ancient Music

Updated: Feb 28, 2023

Music is found in every known culture and religion, past and present, varying widely between times and places. Since all people of the world, including the most isolated tribal groups, have a form of music, it may be concluded that music is likely to have been present in the ancestral population prior to the dispersal of humans around the world.

Ancient music refers to the music of early civilizations from the ancient Near East, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Surviving written records of music from this period, such as hymns, songs, and instrumental pieces, reveal a variety of musical styles and practices, often with a strong religious or ceremonial context. Ancient Greek music, for example, was highly complex and featured a system of modes and scales, while ancient Egyptian music often accompanied religious ceremonies and funerary rituals. Despite the limited amount of surviving musical notation, ancient music has had a lasting influence on Western classical music and continues to be studied and performed by musicians and scholars today.
